Mission Books from Birth's mission is to promote kindergarten readiness and strengthen family bonds in Shelby County by providing age-appropriate books for all children from birth to age five.
Background

Books from Birth works in partnership with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library and the Governor's Books from Birth Foundation (GBBF) to put books in the hands of young children. In 1996, Parton launched the Imagination Library to inspire a love for reading and learning by ensuring all children in her home county had books in their homes, regardless of their family's income. GBBF was created in 2004 to allow Dolly Parton's Imagination Library to be available to every child in Tennessee. GBBF serves as a funding resource to Tennessee counties establishing and sustaining Imagination Libraries by matching all funds raised by each Imagination Library program. In 2005, then Shelby County Mayor A.C. Wharton established BFB as the Shelby County affiliate of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library with generous help from local foundations.

Impact Books from Birth has been shown to impact Kindergarten Readiness and improve general outcomes around elementary school performance. Research shows dramatic improvements in both mean scores around reading readiness and the spread of scores (the lowest scores are higher, the highest even better).
Needs

Since 2005, BFB has served over 100,000 Shelby County children with 4 million books. Each month, 600-700 children graduate from the program and more than 1,000 new registrations are added each month, fueled by grassroots outreach in neighborhoods, childcare centers and literacy groups. Currently, BFB needs support from local donors to help provide books from young children in Shelby County. Additionally, BFB needs volunteers to help enroll children in the program and spread the word about early childhood literacy.

Examples of Program Success

The Urban Child Institute, in partnership with Memphis City Schools, evaluated Shelby County Books from Birth Program and its effects on kindergarten readiness in 2012, with a followup in 2014. Their analysis indicates that students who participated in the program had higher scores in reading development in second grade, compared to students who had not participated.
